New Street Class – We’re excited to announce that Street will be gaining it’s own Juvenile section! Initially when we introduced Tuesday’s Street classes, Teacher availability meant the classes had to start from 5:00pm, but now they can start from 4:15pm, so the new Juvenile Street class will run from that time. All students who’re in the younger bracket of Junior Street are invited to attend this 4:15pm class from next term. (for some people this will mean no more 45minute break between Street and Musical Theatre, and will also mean getting home an hour and a half earlier on a Tuesday! – at least, until they become a ‘Junior’ in Street again…) Age groups as a whole are changing from September, explained further down this email, but one step at a time! Students in Junior Street will be receiving individual emails soon asking them if they’d like to attend the Juvenile Street class instead.

Kings Fees – we’re a bit late on collecting Kings fees – #BlameRob – if you know what you owe for Kings please bring cash in a named envelope as soon as possible! We were planning to use a swanky new spreadsheet to calculate everybody’s fees but it’s taken a little longer than anticipated. If you are struggling to recall what’s been entered please let me know and I’ll check the entries! £4.50 solos, £4.00 for duets, trios and troupes. (Some of you may have forms that say £5.00 for solos – that’s an error!)

Acro Workshop Thursday 31st May cancelled – Miss Hayley’s Acro workshop has had to be cancelled as she is no longer available during the half term week. If you had your heart set on doing something that day, Rob’s offering a Fitness and Flexibility session instead, 10am-12 £5.00 – Juveniles and up! Book at reception or through Facebook/Email. (Shorts/leggings and tshirt/vest are ideal, remember a drinks bottle and trainers!)

Exams October 2018 – exam lists for the October exams will be set and put up after the summer holiday. Students readiness for exams is continually/formatively assessed during lessons before summon, any lessons attended during the holidays, and when term resumes in September. Summer holiday lessons are not mandatory; if you are looking to take an exam this time and are able to attend a some lessons please do.

Age Groups – From September we’ll be making a change to how we divide age groups, this will be to bring JL Dance’s age groups in line with King’s Festival and Midlands Festival, as these will be our main festivals for the foreseeable future. The planned age groupings for September 2018 onwards are:

  • Teenies = 3-5yrs
  • Tots = 5-6yrs
  • Juvenile = 7-9yrs
  • Junior = 10-12yrs
  • Inters = 13-15yrs
  • Seniors = 16yrs+

Price change – from September 2018 normal classes will be priced at £4.25 per lesson up from £4.00, (Musical Theatre will also be going down to £4.25 from £4.50 for simplicity.)  and Teenie’s classes will be £3.25. A new list of private lesson prices will also be added soon.

Increasing our prices is something we have a track record for putting off as long as possible, it was several years before our first price increase, and it’s been several years since. This is only the 2nd time in over 7 years that we have conceded to putting up lesson prices to accommodate the rising costs of running the dance school.

Term Dates – just a reminder that term dates and other important dates are summarised on the bottom of the timetable page www.jldance.co.uk/timetable)

So finally, what you’ve been waiting to hear about… JL DOES DISNEY!

If you haven’t heard already, we are organising a trip to Disney Land Paris for our students and their families on 30th May 2019 – 1st June 2019! The trip includes an opportunity to perform on the Disney Stage (similar to the London trip!), 3-Day 2xPark Performing Arts Hopper Ticket, and a Character Breakfast (+£5 supplement for adults). So anyway! I’m going to try my very best to get as much info out in as short sentences as I can, while including the small print that we’ve been sent where necessary… here goes!

  • We’ll be looked after by a company called ‘Cogo’http://www.cogotravel.co.uk/
  • Our contact there is Lucy Newton, Lucy trained at Laine Theatre Arts, played Glinda in Wicked at the Apollo Theatre, played Éponine in the West End production of Les Misérables and was a live finalist in the 2006 X-Factor in the group ‘The Unconventionals’ – so when it comes to working with dancers and dance families, she totally “get’s it!”
  • Accommodation: Disney’s Hotel Cheyenne on a Bed and Breakfast basis.
    • ‘French law forbids anyone under the age of 18 years and not related from sharing a bed. Unrelated children cannot occupy 4 share rooms. Number of people must match room type.
  • Travel: not included, an option to provide travel in the cost was offered too us, but knowing some would rather fly, some would rather catch the train etc, we decided on the no-travel option.
  • Price:
    • £289pp Based on 4 sharing (Bedshare-families only)
    • £309pp Based on 3 sharing
    • £359pp Based on 2 sharing
    • £50pp deposit
  • Who can perform? Since this trip is about the performance, performance experience is required! Students must have participated in two shows and one competition by the time of the trip. Age groupings does not matter, we’ll make groups based on who’s interested, so there won’t be anyone who’s disappointed because their age group isn’t chosen to perform. If you want to be involved, we’ll make it work. The troupes that are set for Disney will also be used for the Show.
  • What about setting and rehearsals? To organise this we have a process in mind:
    • We’d like an idea of ‘definitely interested’ by Monday the start of half term, 27th May.
    • We’ll then look at who’s interested and be able to have an idea of what lessons will need arranging based on numbers and age splits.
    • We’ll aim to have a list of rehearsal dates out by the end of half term.
    • Once this list of rehearsals is out, if you can make all of them then we can put your name down as a definite.
    • Regarding the £50pp deposit, we don’t currently know when that will be due by. Will let you know as soon as we know!
    • Rehearsal days are most likely to be one Sunday a month, possibly starting as early as September, as you’d imagine, we’ll need 100% commitment to all rehearsals.
