The JL Way

The JL Way is our name for three guiding principles: Start with Hello, Ready and Respectful, and Courage and Kindness. They put into words the standards and values that have shaped JL Dance Academy since 2010.

In brief

  • The JL Way belongs to students, families, teachers, staff and visitors.
  • The principles are not new rules. They describe how we have always tried to do things.
  • Together, they follow the shape of a visit: arriving, getting ready and taking part.

Lived first, written down now

For 15 years, JL has grown through ordinary moments: a teacher greeting a nervous child, a student watching while a friend takes their turn, or a parent finding the right words after an exam. Those moments matter as much as steps, grades and performances.

The way we behave is not new. Giving it a name and writing it down is. The first 15 years showed us who we want to be. Writing it down helps make the next 15 years brighter and more brilliant than the first.

Three principles for a complete visit

Start with Hello is about arrival. A greeting, a smile or eye contact tells someone that they have been noticed and are welcome. Ready and Respectful covers the time before class, between classes and while someone else is dancing. It means being prepared and taking care of the people and spaces around us.

Courage and Kindness is what allows learning to happen. Courage means joining in, trying again and asking for help. Kindness means supporting other people and speaking to yourself fairly when something goes wrong. Together, the principles carry us from the front door, through the lesson and back out again.

03

A shared commitment

The JL Way is for everyone, not just children. Teachers set the tone when they welcome a class and respond calmly to mistakes. Parents and carers shape reception, the changing rooms and the conversations that happen on the way home. Visitors and older students also show newer dancers what belonging here looks like.

These are guiding principles, not a list of demands. They give us simple language for noticing what is going well and gently resetting when we need to: “Remember, we start with hello,” or “What would ready and respectful look like here?”

Our guiding principles are an anchor for people already here, and a lighthouse for those still trying to find us.

At JL

What this means

For existing JL families, these principles are an anchor: a steady reminder of who we are when days are busy or something feels difficult. For people looking in from outside, they are a lighthouse. They show how we operate and the standards we are proud to hold.

Over the rest of this series, we introduce each principle properly and show what it looks like in everyday life at JL.

What we hope stays with you

Years from now, we hope dancers remember more than the routines they learned. We hope they remember being noticed when they arrived, feeling prepared to take part, finding the courage to try and knowing that kindness surrounded them.

Most of all, we hope they remember how it felt to be part of JL Dance Academy.
