Private Lessons at JL Dance
Private lessons can feel a little confusing if you are new to dance, so this page explains what they are, when they are useful, and how to book them.
Private lessons are an additional option for students who would like focused time with a teacher. They are often used for competition routines, exam preparation, specific technique work, or skills that need more individual support.

What are private lessons?
Private lessons are bookable sessions where one or more students work with a teacher in a more focused setting.
They can be booked as:
1-to-1 private lessons
2-to-1 lessons, often used for duets
3-to-1 lessons, often used for trios
4-to-1 lessons, often used for quartets
They are commonly used for setting and rehearsing choreography that is specific to a student or small group, especially for competition routines such as solos, duets, trios and quartets.
Private lessons may also be used in the run-up to exams to go over syllabus work, or to work on particular tricks, technique or skills that would benefit from more individual teacher support.
Private lessons and regular classes
Private lessons are different from regular classes.
Regular classes are where students build their general technique, confidence, syllabus knowledge, performance skills and group work over time. Private lessons are a focused addition, usually used for a specific purpose such as choreography, exam preparation or individual skill development.
Private lessons are not a replacement or alternative to regular weekly classes.
Who are private lessons for?
Private lessons are generally used by existing JL Dance students, but external students are also welcome.
They are especially common for competition students who need individual choreography or rehearsal time, but they can also be useful for non-competition students who would like extra support with a particular area of their dancing.
For non-members, JL Dance highly recommends getting in touch before booking. This helps make sure the correct teacher, service and lesson type are chosen for the student’s needs.
What styles can private lessons cover?
Private lessons can be used for any dance style offered by the teaching team, depending on teacher availability.
When booking, it is recommended that parents choose a teacher who specialises in the style or area the student wants to work on. For example, this could be competition choreography, exam syllabus, technique, tricks or a specific dance style.
If you are unsure who to book with, speak to your child’s regular teacher or contact the JL Dance team for guidance.
Competition routines and music
For competition routines, JL Dance adds the routine to the student database. Routine information can then be accessed through the Comp Team portal .
Lesson length and availability
Private lessons are a minimum of 30 minutes and can be booked for longer where teacher and room availability allows. Some lessons may be 30 minutes, while others may be longer depending on the student’s needs and the availability shown online.
Private lessons are subject to teacher and room availability. Not every teacher, style or time slot will always be available.
If a suitable slot is not showing, parents are welcome to keep checking the booking page as new availability may be added when teachers update their schedules. Parents may also contact JL Dance for advice, but additional availability is not always possible.
Where do private lessons take place?
All private lessons take place at the JL Dance studios in Ripley, Derbyshire.
JL Dance does not offer private lessons as home visits or at external venues.

Pricing
Private lessons are priced per 30 minutes and the price varies depending on the teacher.
Prices are shown clearly before booking, so parents know what they will pay before confirming. Payment is made online at the time of booking.
Shared private lessons
Private lessons can be shared where students are working on shared choreography, such as duets, trios or quartets.
One person makes and pays for the booking. If the lesson is being shared, the other students should arrange payment of their share directly with the person who booked the lesson.
Cancellations
Private lessons require at least 72 hours’ notice for cancellation and refund.
This cancellation window is in place because teachers schedule their work in advance, and three days’ notice gives a fair amount of time to manage the booking.
Bookings cannot be cancelled for a refund with less than 72 hours’ notice.
If a student can no longer attend, families may offer the private lesson slot to another suitable student instead.

What should students wear?
Students should wear their normal dance uniform and bring anything they would usually need for their lesson, such as the correct shoes and a water bottle.
For competition routines that are stage-ready, students are welcome to practise in costume if they would like to.
Can parents leave during a private lesson?
JL Dance teachers hold DBS checks and First Aid certificates, so parents are welcome to leave the site during a private lesson if they wish.
If dropping a student off, parents must let the teacher know, make sure JL Dance has up-to-date contact details, and return on time for collection.
