Behaviour, equality and inclusion
The JL Way applies to everybody: Start with Hello, Ready and Respectful, and Courage and Kindness. We address behaviour without humiliation, respond to bullying or discrimination, and consider reasonable adjustments rather than making assumptions.
Shared standards
- Treat dancers, families, staff, visitors, spaces and equipment with respect.
- Follow safety instructions and allow others to learn without deliberate disruption.
- No bullying, harassment, intimidation, discriminatory language, online targeting or retaliation.
- Adults model the same calm behaviour expected from children.
When behaviour causes concern
- Make the immediate situation safe and listen to those involved.
- Speak with parents privately and keep other children’s information confidential.
- Use clear, proportionate and restorative steps where safe, with an individual plan if ordinary reminders are not enough.
- Pause or end participation only where behaviour remains seriously unsafe or harmful after support, or immediate risk requires it.
We challenge behaviour; we do not label a child as a bad person.
Equality and reasonable adjustments
- JL does not unlawfully discriminate and responds to harassment connected with a protected characteristic.
- Tell us about barriers or adjustments that have helped before. We will involve the dancer and family in finding a practical approach.
- Adjustments may include clearer instructions, rest breaks, communication changes, adapted movement, transition support or accessible information.
- JL does not charge a disabled person for a reasonable adjustment.
- If an adjustment would fundamentally change a class or leave a significant safety risk that cannot be managed, JL will explain and consider alternatives.
Raising a concern
Speak privately with the teacher or email [email protected]. A safety or safeguarding concern is dealt with immediately; another unresolved concern can use the complaints route in the Enrolment Terms.
Legal and guidance basis
These sources explain the legal or official-guidance background. Not every practical JL rule is imposed by a particular Act: where it is JL’s own rule, it is written to be clear, proportionate and consistent with the sources below.
- Equality Act 2010: guidance for service providers Official guidance on discrimination and reasonable adjustments.
- DfE: Safeguarding guidance for out-of-school settings Current safeguarding guidance for activity and tuition providers in England.
Something does not fit your situation?
Email [email protected] before making a commitment. We will explain the rule, consider relevant circumstances and confirm any agreed exception in writing.
