Student safety and welfare
Families provide accurate safety information, arrive and collect on time, and keep dancers home when they are infectious or too unwell to participate. JL assesses risks, provides appropriate supervision and first aid, and responds calmly to emergencies.
Attendance and readiness
- Arrive a few minutes early, dressed and ready, and report absences through the normal JL route.
- Warm-ups matter. A late dancer waits for the teacher’s acknowledgement before joining.
- After the trial period, wear the class uniform, correct safely fitted footwear, secure long hair and remove jewellery that could catch or injure.
- Religious, cultural, sensory, disability and medical adjustments are discussed respectfully and agreed where reasonably safe.
Illness, injury and medication
- Tell JL about relevant medical conditions, allergies, injuries, medication and support needs, and report changes.
- Stay home with vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, contagious illness or when the dancer is not well enough to participate safely.
- Do not push through pain. Tell the teacher about an injury before class.
- Routine medication remains the parent’s responsibility unless JL agrees an arrangement in advance. Emergency medication must be in date, labelled, accessible and accompanied by clear instructions.
Arrival and collection
- Parents are responsible until a clear handover and from the stated finish time.
- JL releases children to an authorised collector or through recorded independent-departure permission.
- Tell JL about a one-off collector change before collection; an unfamiliar adult may be asked to confirm identifying information.
- If collection is late, JL supervises the child and calls contacts. If nobody can be reached and the delay becomes a safeguarding concern, JL may seek agency advice.
Health, safety and first aid
- JL reviews proportionate risk assessments for premises, activities, equipment and events.
- Teachers use age-appropriate progression, suitable equipment and safe class capacity.
- JL provides first aid within staff competence, contacts the parent and calls emergency services when needed.
- Accidents and significant near misses are recorded and legally required reports are made where applicable.
Fire and evacuation
- Leave immediately by the nearest safe route when the alarm sounds or staff direct it.
- Do not collect belongings. Go to the stated assembly point and remain with the group.
- Parents do not remove a child from the assembly point without telling the responsible teacher.
- Nobody re-enters until the fire and rescue service or responsible person says it is safe.
Lost property
Label belongings and keep valuables at home. JL stores found items for a reasonable period where practical. Unclaimed low-value items may then be donated, recycled or disposed of responsibly, while phones, keys, wallets and personal documents receive additional care.
Legal and guidance basis
These sources explain the legal or official-guidance background. Not every practical JL rule is imposed by a particular Act: where it is JL’s own rule, it is written to be clear, proportionate and consistent with the sources below.
- DfE: Safeguarding guidance for out-of-school settings Current safeguarding guidance for activity and tuition providers in England.
- HSE: Health and safety basics Official guidance on risk assessment, safe premises, first aid and incident reporting.
