Optional activities and bookings
Trials, private lessons, exams, competitions, shows, costumes and studio hire sit outside ordinary class enrolment. JL explains the dates, price, attendance and cancellation commitment before a family books or enters.
Trials and waiting lists
- A trial is a normal class without a commitment to enrol. Comfortable clothing is fine and no uniform purchase is needed first.
- A trial does not guarantee a permanent place. JL may recommend a different level or class for a safer, better fit.
- Waiting lists are managed using the request date alongside relevant age, level and the place available. Offers may have a reasonable reply deadline.
Private lessons and workshops
- Prices and availability appear before online payment confirms the booking.
- Private lessons are optional, normally for 1 to 4 dancers, and do not replace weekly classes.
- At least 72 hours’ notice is normally needed for a cancellation refund. With less notice, JL considers actual loss and exceptional circumstances fairly.
- If JL cancels, a rearranged booking or refund is offered.
Exams, competitions and performances
- JL provides the organiser, likely dates, known costs, attendance expectations and withdrawal position before commitment.
- Exam entry follows teacher readiness advice, but families may decline without losing the ordinary class place.
- Competition running orders and some event changes are controlled by third-party organisers.
- After JL has committed money to an organiser, venue or supplier, a withdrawal refund depends on what can reasonably be recovered.
- The JL Way and the organiser’s safeguarding, changing, photography and safety rules apply throughout.
Costumes and costume hire
- JL explains whether an item is purchased, hired or borrowed, what is included and the expected price before payment.
- Families provide measurements promptly, check fit and follow care and return instructions.
- Custom or altered items may have limited cancellation rights once work starts, but rights for faulty or misdescribed goods remain.
- A charge for avoidable loss or damage to hired items reflects reasonable repair or replacement cost, not a penalty.
Studio hire
- The named hirer is responsible for the agreed activity, participants, supervision, insurance and safe use during the booking.
- Use the studio only for the agreed purpose and times, keep exits clear, report damage or incidents and leave the space tidy.
- At least 48 hours’ notice is normally needed for a refund. Any retained amount reflects JL’s actual commitment and loss.
- JL does not exclude responsibility where the law does not allow it, including death or injury caused by negligence.
Legal and guidance basis
These sources explain the legal or official-guidance background. Not every practical JL rule is imposed by a particular Act: where it is JL’s own rule, it is written to be clear, proportionate and consistent with the sources below.
- Consumer Rights Act 2015 The main UK legislation on consumer services and fair contract terms.
- CMA: How to write fair contracts Official guidance on clear terms, advance payments and proportionate cancellation charges.
- DfE: Safeguarding guidance for out-of-school settings Current safeguarding guidance for activity and tuition providers in England.
- HSE: Health and safety basics Official guidance on risk assessment, safe premises, first aid and incident reporting.
